Türkiye is a growing manufacturing and export hub for orthopedic and arthroscopy implants. This article covers production processes and quality standards.

In short: The core standard in medical implant manufacturing is ISO 13485. Maxx Global Medical produces titanium and PEEK implants with CNC Swiss-turning in Ankara and offers OEM / private-label services.

What is ISO 13485?

ISO 13485 is a quality management system standard specific to medical devices. It requires all processes — from design to production, sterilization to traceability — to be documented and kept under control. For an implant manufacturer, this standard is fundamental to trust and international acceptance.

Unlike ISO 9001, the general quality management standard, it imposes stricter requirements on risk management, traceability and record keeping. For every lot produced, it must be possible to trace back which raw material, which machine and which parameters were used.

How is an orthopedic implant manufactured?

Titanium and PEEK implants are usually machined with CNC Swiss-turning technology. The process includes material intake and certification, precision machining, surface treatment, cleaning, quality control (dimensional and surface), packaging and sterilization. Every lot is recorded in a traceable manner.

Swiss-turning is widely used for anchor bodies, screws and similar small implants because it allows long, slender parts to be machined with minimal deflection. Micron-level tolerances are verified through in-process measurement and final inspection steps.

Quality control steps

  • Material verification: recording of raw material certificates.
  • Dimensional control: verification of critical dimensions with measurement equipment.
  • Surface inspection: assessment of burrs, roughness and visual defects.
  • Cleaning: removal of manufacturing residues through controlled washing processes.
  • Packaging and labelling: application of lot numbers and traceability information.

Türkiye's position in orthopedic implant manufacturing

Thanks to its precision machining infrastructure and engineering capacity, Türkiye has become increasingly visible in orthopedic implant manufacturing. The organized industrial zones in and around Ankara are among the centres where CNC machining expertise is concentrated. This infrastructure has developed in a way that makes the tight-tolerance production and short development cycles the medical sector requires possible.

Geographic location is also decisive in logistical terms; access to European, Middle Eastern and North African markets simplifies production and shipment planning. Maxx Global Medical carries out its manufacturing within this ecosystem, in İvedik OIZ, Ankara.

Certification and export

For a facility producing for international markets, ISO 13485 alone is not sufficient; the regulatory requirements of the destination market also enter the process. Technical file preparation, material certificates and lot-based records form the basis of this work. Regular auditing of the quality management system and keeping records up to date are preconditions for sustainable export.

OEM and private-label manufacturing

Many distributors and brands have their product line produced by a manufacturer. In OEM and private-label production, size, material, configuration and packaging are customized to the customer. This model allows brand owners to access quality implants without building production infrastructure.

An OEM process usually starts from a technical drawing or a sample, followed by sample production, dimensional verification and series production approval. Packaging design and label content are also defined at this stage according to the customer's market.
